Ask A Question

Q: Is this book focused on a specific technology? Does it cover technology x?
A: The book is not a "technical" book. Through multiple IT turnaround and IT effectiveness consulting engagements we have identified the root-causes of the major issues that plague underperforming IT departments. The majority of these relate to the leadership in the IT department, and the focus in IT on the business aspects of running the department. A review of the publications in the marketplace revealed a gap between academic research-focused offerings and technology-oriented books. We have captured the symptoms, causes and cures for troubled IT departments in a practical, approachable guide that is appropriate for company senior management, IT managers, directors and CIOs.

Q: How quickly can the IT manager begin implementing the practices outlined in your book?
A: The majority of the approaches are immediately implementable. The focus of the book is on the practical, hands-on management techniques that make the IT manager a success. In addition, we have included a variety of tools and templates on an accompanying CD-ROM. We have also provided links to research and relevant Internet resources as part of this website (link to: http://www.exec-guide.com/linksresources.html)

Q: How practical is the advice provided?
A: The practices in the book are based on real-world, field-tested methodologies and techniques that have proven successful in the IT departments of large and small companies across a wide variety of industries. In writing the book we were not satisfied merely to describe the problems of struggling IT departments, but also to prescribe their solutions. Furthermore, we attempted to follow every "should" with a "because" to ensure that the reader understands the thinking, logic and experience behind each practice.
