Technical Information

We use a Scanmate Drum Scanner to scan all film, copy shots, and flexible originals that are 8x10 or smaller. A drum scanner uses PMT (photo multiplier tube) technology, which is vastly superior to CCD (charged coupled device) technology found in flat bed scanners, slide scanners, digital still, and video cameras. Drum scanning is a labor-intensive process, but it is the only way to get scanned images that retain every bit of original detail, from the brightest highlight to the deepest shadow. Many other printers use flatbed scanners to scan film because they are less expensive, much easier to operate, and they can scan a larger variety of originals with a single scanner.

We use the Phase One H25 digital camera back for Digital capture. This is a fantastic solution for artists who want the very best “no compromise” image capture available. Requesting digital capture of your original generally requires 2 to 4 extra days, but the results are worth the wait. Digital capture removes one generation of reproduction over a traditional transparency film copy shot and any of its’ inherent issues. (film grain, color balance, exposure of film, etc.)

Our main printer is the Epson Stylus Pro 9600. It is loaded with Epsons Ultrachrome Pigment ink set, which strikes the best balance between image longevity and color saturation available in todays modern inks. We also use the new Epson Stylus Pro 4000 printer. This smaller printer allows us to produce a higher volume of smaller prints than is feasible on our larger printer. It is also loaded with Epsons Ultrachrome Pigment ink set.
